Unmasking Lab
Class Details
Unmasking Lab w/ Amina House of the Lorde | 2233 S Throop St. Chicago IL 60608 Saturday, March 21 | 1-3 PM A monthly space for structured exploration of unmasking for neurodivergent and neuro-questioning folks. Join us to stim, accommodate, collaborate, and advocate ourselves into a more powerful way of being. “As a Black lesbian feminist comfortable with the many different ingredients of my identity, and a woman committed to racial and sexual freedom from oppression, I find I am constantly being encouraged to pluck out some one aspect of myself and present this as the meaningful whole, eclipsing or denying the other parts of self. But this is a destructive and fragmenting way to live. My fullest concentration of energy is available to me only when I integrate all the parts of who I am, openly, allowing power from particular sources of my living to flow back and forth freely through all my different selves, without the restrictions of externally imposed definition. Only then can I bring myself and my energies as a whole to the service of those struggles which I embrace as part of my living.” -Audre Lorde in "Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference." Scholarships: Two scholarship slots per class are reserved for Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and queer folks for whom finances are a barrier. Apply at www.houseofthelorde.com/scholarship Nobody turned away for lack of funds. If finances are a barrier, email info@embodydivergence.com Accommodations Participants will be asked to (COVID) mask while we unmask (neuronormativity). KN95 masks are available in the space. HOTL is located on the 5th floor of a larger complex, Mana Contemporary and is accessible via an ADA accessible ramp and elevator. The space is wheelchair-accessible. About Amina (Facilitator) Amina is a speech therapist and founder of Embody Divergence, a private practice centered on somatic speech therapy and authentic expression arts programming. As an undiagnosed neurodivergent person from a family with diagnosed autistic and ADHD members, she brings both professional expertise and lived experience of recovery from years of dissociation and burnout. Drawing on training as a yoga teacher, somatic circle-keeper, and artist, Amina creates spaces where people can explore unmasking through embodied, collaborative practices. She is currently writing a book on how to unmask guided by the wisdom of Audre Lorde's essay, "Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power."
