Class Details

King in the Making: Drag King 101 Chicago Drag King Class Tuesdays | February 24 - March 17 | 6:30 - 7:30 pm $125 | House of the Lorde – 2233 S. Throop St, Suite 502 Maximum 10 participants | Minimum 7 participants Led by the legendary Po’Chop, this four week session introduces the foundations of drag king artistry through embodied exploration. The course centers how masculinity lives, moves, and expresses through the body. Participants will identify personal influences and intentions, develop a drag persona, craft a movement score, and learn the fundamentals of lip sync as a storytelling tool. Through guided exercises and creative exploration, students will build skills rooted in intention, imagination, and authenticity. This supportive, beginner-friendly class welcomes all identities, skill levels, and abilities. Accommodations and movement modifications are available to support full participation for every body. What to Bring Comfortable clothes for movement A journal for reflection Safety Masks are required during the first week of class. Antigen tests will be provided for subsequent sessions. Scholarships Two scholarship spots per session are reserved for Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and queer individuals for whom finances are a barrier. Apply at houseofthelorde.com/scholarship About Po'Chop Jenn Freeman | Po'Chop is an interdisciplinary artist who creates on the homeland of the Council of the Three Fires: The Odawa, Council of the Three Fires: The Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi Nations; as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sauk and Meskwaki; the Kiikaapoi, Peoria, and the Očeti Šakówiŋ (Sioux) Nations. Freeman, also known as Po’Chop, weaves dance, storytelling, drag and striptease together to create experiences that illuminate Black queer life. She is a co-founder of House of the Lorde, a multi-functional space rooted in Black Feminist praxis, the co-producer of the adored Notes on Masculinity, a drag king centered cabaret and creator of The Black Burlesque Directory, an archive of Black burlesque performers across the world. Freeman has collaborated with Jamila Woods, Anna Martine Whitehead and VAM Studio. Her work has been supported by Foundation of Contemporary Art, DANCE/USA, Urban Bush Women, United States Artists and Chicago Dancemakers Forum.
